Conceptual Inspirations—
The first time we turned the corner into “ground zero” of the River Arts District, my heart skipped a beat in confusion — the trees in the roundabout looked decked out for a party, with streamers hanging from their delicate branches — until my mind caught up half a beat later, recognizing the miscellaneous debris trapped in the trees by the violent waters that had ripped through, carrying shreds of buildings and belongings to be lodged within whatever managed to stand rooted within its path.
As the days and weeks have passed, the debris remains. Fragments of what was once dwelled in a home, in a studio, in a workplace, now broken open and strewn across roadways and under bridges, buried in muck. But little by little, it’s being dug up. Shoveled, searched, hauled. Flowers are still blooming underneath the cake of mud.
Slowly we are patching ourselves, our places, our community back together. Salvaging fragments of what we loved most. Letting go of what can’t be saved, to make space for rebuilding and for growth. The patchwork will take a long time.
