Because He Was Honest

Acrylic on canvas, 11” x 14”

Have you ever experienced the clarifying stillness of snow freshly settled on evergreen boughs, the stark purity of cold air filling your lungs, the lightness of being that comes with the sound of water flowing, carving its lively path through the ice? These sensations for me stand parallel to a feeling that emanates in a moment of transparent communication, of words uttered intimately and honestly. This painting honors the fresh slate that comes with knowing, with seeing things clearly.

Without the Weight of Desire

Desire can be lush and intoxicating. Desire can also be sticky, heavy, limiting. It can cause a point of focus so intense that no other offerings can be seen. What happens when that weight is lifted? When we are able to feel full and sated, open and receptive? Without the weight of desire, the present moment is of the essence. Opportunities present themselves with ease. Feelings of gratefulness and mindfulness are ample, and our world is illuminated. This landscape welcomes the viewer into a space in which they can step away from yearning, draw inward, and gracefully be.

This image holds space for dualistic experiences. The juxtaposition of feeling calm, at peace, and contemplative while simultaneously feeling fiery, impassioned, and vivacious is a deeply enlivening sensation. This dynamic landscape struck me as perfectly fitting: Imagine walking tenderly across a vast expanse of molten rock. Steam vents crack open along your path, spitting puffs of volcanic breath. The ground you walk upon seems as though it could gape open at any moment, swallowing any life into its ruthless belly. Yet, up from such haggard crust grows delicate foliage, as brilliant and alive as the lava below. The 'Ohi'a lehua plants do not bend to the intensity of the volcano; instead they stand with grace, bearing luminous red flowers that flutter with elegance. The volcano alone would be harsh and extreme, but the plants that dance upon and despite its surface complete its presence, striking the core of all who bear witness to its sublime duality.

Inspired by the intricately enfolded cliffs and hollows of the Kalalau Valley, this painting serves to honor the journey of that trail as much as the freedom of spirit that results from its rhythms and the secrets that seem to dwell within its secluded beach. This piece encourages its viewers to release bindings, to be still, to meditate on presence and expansion.

Imagine that you're floating down a river in the dead of night. No light is shed from stars or moon; you can barely see your own body. Lightning strikes in the distance and you continue on, rowing blindly towards the barely perceptible glow of civilization on the furthest horizon. Suddenly, you are struck by a sudden opening. A door appears before you, grand and alluring. What can be revealed? The familiar or the inconceivable? Sometimes these unveilings are one in the same. I invite you to sit with this image and whatever revelations may come.

The Balance Between Order & Disorder

Acrylic on canvas, 8” x 10”

This image was born on the brink of finding oneself. There are phases in life that are dripping with chaos; hurdles thrust you blindly forward into the vast unknown, sometimes again and again. All you can do is hold on and ride the waves. And then, suddenly, stillness. A moment presents itself as a marker, an opportunity to breathe, to catch up, to reflect. In this moment, a balance is revealed. A path can be chosen and embraced. A sense of rightness and belonging can be felt. But, you know this pause cannot last; there is no knowing without growth, and there is no growth without discord... and so the cycle begins again.

Sometimes a thought, a sensation, a realization creeps up on you. You may feel the rising of its truth deep within the layers of your consciousness, but until it bears its head, that knowing is fuzzy, hazy, soft. And then suddenly, it's there in full, glorious clarity. These foggy mountains are the known yet unknown. They are the expanse of the collective unconscious, the subtle nature of existence. They are the moments that lead to mindful presence.

"The fog knows my secrets. Wet buds rise to cup words in their furled leaves, slowly eager to hear, to hold, to know."
